Electing their new representatives today, one thing South Koreans had in common was a hope for the country to overcome the current crisis.
The new Assembly will serve for four years.
Here are some voters explaining what they hope it will achieve.
"When I got to the polling station today, it felt quite different from previous elections because people were lined up a meter apart from each other. Rather than fighting over ideology, I hope lawmakers can come up with policies that all citizens can appreciate."
"First of all,... for my local constituency, I voted for the candidate I think can develop this district. And for the proportional representation,... I tried to choose the party that can keep the current ruling party in check."
"This was my first time voting because I'm now over 18. It felt different than voting for class leaders at school. I'm worried about the gap between the rich and the poor,... so I hope those elected will work on policies so that people from all classes can live happily together."
"I was thinking that our economic challenges will continue because of the coronavirus outbreak. I hope our nation can overcome this crisis together with helpful policies that result in a breakthrough."
As turnout goes up, vote by vote, I hope our politicians recognize that the people are paying attention.
"In difficult times like this, citizens should work together. Politicians, especially, should focus on state affairs rather than fighting over ideology."
"I was surprised when I saw such a long line at the polling station despite the COVID-19 outbreak. Seeing this made me think I ought to vote in every election going forward. As a university student, when choosing candidates, I was looking for campaign pledges that can improve my life when I get older."
"My children are voting for the first time in their lives, so I'm very excited.
Since I own my business, I hope they can take measures that help self-employed people generate more income."
"I'm very happy because this is my first time voting. With the new National Assembly, I hope employment will improve, especially for young people starting their own businesses and looking for jobs."
