Russia sends 2 Tu-160 nuclear bombers to South Africa in display of defense cooperation
  • 5 years ago
In a rare display of cooperation, Russia on Wednesday landed the world's biggest military aircraft...Tu-160 Blackjack Bombers in South Africa.
The two planes flew more than ten-thousand kilometers non-stop for over 13 hours except when pilots had to refuel in the sky mid-journey.
Invented between the 70s and 80s, the Tu-160 Blackjack is a supersonic strategic bomber.
Describing the visit to South Africa as a sign of their "strategic partnership," Russia's Defense Ministry said Moscow will use the planes in joint military exercises with South Africa.
This came as Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted dozens of African leaders on Wednesday at the first-ever Russia-Africa summit.
