A protester was shot by a live police round as clashes erupted across parts of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.  Protesters rallied on October 1, 2019, despite heightened security and the closure of more than two dozen MTR stations.  Tensions quickly boiled over, with police firing tear gas to disperse protesters, who set fires and threw petrol bombs at police.
