Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday pitched for launching a "new mass movement" On single-use plastic from October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In his monthly radio address 'Mann ki Baat', the prime minister said when the country observes the 150 birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, "we will launch a new mass movement against use of plastic". He also called for efforts to ensure proper collection and storage of plastic to save the environment.

మానవులు నిత్య జీవితంలో ఎన్నో గృహ సంబంధిత అవసరాల కోసం ప్లాస్టిక్ వినియోగిస్తున్నారు. ఒక సర్వే ప్రకారం ఒక సంవత్సరానికి 100 మిలియన్ టన్నుల ప్లాస్టిక్ ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ఉత్పత్తి అవుతుంది. ప్లాస్టిక్ పర్యావరణానికి అతి పెద్ద సమస్యగా మారింది. ప్లాస్టిక్ భూమిలో కరిగిపోవటానికి కొన్ని లక్షల సంవత్సరాల సమయం పడుతుంది. ప్లాస్టిక్ కు రంగు ఇవ్వటానికి వినియోగించే రసాయనాలలో క్యాన్సర్ సంబంధిత పదార్థాలు ఉన్నట్లు శాస్త్రవేత్తల పరిశోధనలలో తేలింది.దేశంలోని ఈ ప్లాస్టిక్ సమస్యపై పోరాటం కోసం కేంద్రం ఒక నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది. సెప్టెంబర్ నెల 17 వ తేదీ నుండి ప్లాస్టిక్ పై పోరాటం కోసం కేంద్రం ఒక కార్యక్రమాన్ని ప్రారంభించబోతుంది. రైల్వే, గృహ నిర్మాణం, వాణిజ్యం, జల్ శక్తి, గ్రామీణాభివృధ్ధి శాఖలతో ఒక బృందాన్ని కేంద్రం ఇప్పటికే తయారు చేసింది. ఈ బృందం ప్లాస్టిక్ నియంత్రణ కోసం సమగ్ర విధానాన్ని రూపొందించబోతుంది. ప్లాస్టిక్ పై పోరాటంలో భాగంగా మొదట వ్యర్థాల నియంత్రణ చేయబోతుంది ప్రభుత్వం.
