U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had an "extended exchange of views on U.S.-China relations" in New York with high-ranking Chinese official Yang Jiechi, according to the U.S. State Department.

Washington and Beijing have been on a standoff regarding the situation in Hong Kong but both sides are hoping for it to be resolved without violence.

On the same day, China denied requests for port visits to Hong Kong by two U.S. Navy ships, according to the United States Pacific Fleet.
