Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said his country wants to maintain the General Security of Military Information Agreement with South Korea... despite deteriorating ties.
The pact signed on November 23, 2016,… is automatically renewed every year unless one side notifies the other of its intention to terminate the bilateral accord 90 days before the renewal date. That means if Seoul chooses to terminate the deal, it has until the end of next month to notify Tokyo.
The agreement was signed as there were growing concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
But as relations between the two neighbors worsened due to disputes over wartime history and trade policy,… some believe the intel sharing pact should be terminated.
