Tesla is reportedly creating designs and prototypes for lithium-ion battery cells.
Business Insider and CNBC refers to the lab "skunkworks lab."
It is located near its Fremont, California, factory.
Tesla is also developing the equipment and methods needed to manufacture the cells, according to CNBC.
Tesla is reportedly unlikely to end its relationship with Panasonic, its battery-cell supplier, in the near future.
