Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon says the government's supplementary budget is a must to revitalize the country's slowing economy,... as well as boost people's safety.
He made the remarks during his parliamentary speech on the need for a 5-point-7 billion U.S. dollar extra spending.
"If the extra budget bill is quickly passed at the National Assembly and implemented smoothly,... it will contribute to lifting the country's growth rate and help revive economic conditions. It's also expected to support efforts to reduce fine-dust levels."
The PM noted that economic uncertainties are growing,... pointing to the ongoing trade dispute between the Washington and Beijing,... as well as an overall slowdown in the global economy.
He added the budget will be used to create new jobs, support start-ups and foster social safety nets to help the vulnerable.
Lee also stressed that people's safety is the utmost priority,... saying the budget will be used to tackle fine-dust pollution and support recovery efforts following the recent devastating wild fires in Gangwon-do Province.
He asked for parliament's full support, so that the budget can be implemented in July at the latest.
The extra budget bill was submitted to the National Assembly in late April,... but it's been left untouched due to a prolonged parliamentary stalemate.
