UN chief urges probe into Gulf of Oman attacks
  • 5 years ago
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the recent attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
He called for an independent probe on Friday, stressing that the world cannot afford a major confrontation in the Gulf.
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres said that the UN will be supportive of any such initiative under the approval of the Security Council.
The U.S. has blamed Iran for the attacks, which Iran rejected.
Other world powers have also condemned the attacks.
The UK has sided with Washington's claim that Iran is responsible, while Germany says it's too early to reach any conclusion.
Japan, China and Russia have also stopped short of blaming anyone and instead have called for the U.S. and Iran to solve their dispute through dialogue.
