S. Korea-Norway agree to boost cooperation in shipbuilding technology, Arctic research

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy revealed Thursday,... that the two countries signed four memorandums of understanding,... taking advantage of President Moon Jae-in's trip to Norway.
Those four areas of cooperation are joint research on autonomous navigation ships, joint development on the automation of oil prospecting ships, using eco-friendly paint for ships, and the testing and certification of European robots.
According to the ministry, the agreement to expand cooperation in shipbuilding will have long-term benefits,... as Norway holds unrivaled technology in smart and environment-friendly materials and future ships.
The two countries also have mutually beneficial shipbuilding sectors,... where Norway exports shipbuilding equipment to South Korea,... and South Korea exports completed ships to Norway.
In 2018,... more than 50 percent of Norway's ship orders went to Korea.
South Korea also had two of its eco-friendly shipbuilding technologies certified by DNV-GL -- an international accredited registrar and classification society.
It approved a design system for cargo in LNG carriers,... and designs for an eco-friendly LNG bunkering ship.
South Korea will also work more closely together with Norway on issues regarding the North Pole.
Seoul's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Foreign Ministry,... announced that it signed an MOU with Oslo's Foreign Ministry on boosting exchanges with five Norway-based research centers.
Norway is a member state of the Arctic Council -- an intergovernmental forum addressing issues such as climate change.
South Korea has also been an observer state in the council since 2013.
The two sides plan to work together on not only relevant research,... but also on academic events, expert exchanges,... and joint responses to issues concerning the Arctic.
