Man in 'Malay attire' detained after worshipping 'Datuk Gong'

The man in a viral video seen worshipping a statue of a deity known as "Datuk Gong" while wearing a Muslim skullcap and sarong, has been detained by police after he surrendered himself at the Kerian district police headquarters (IPD) in Perak on Monday.

Based on preliminary reports, the 43-year-old fisherman is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Section 298A pertains to any act prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different religious or racial groups, and which disturbs, or is likely to disturb the public tranquillity.

According to the police, the man isn't Malay.
