In 1968, Merle Haggard released his album called 'Mama Tried' which featured the 1999 Grammy Hall of Fame Award winning single, 'Mama Tried.' The album charted at number four on the 1969 Billboard Country albums chart.

The song 'Mama Tried' become of Haggard's best known songs which is about his mother's incarceration in 1957. In 1968, 'Mama Tried' became his fifth number one single to chart on the US Billboard Hot Country chart.

The song also featured in the 2008 film 'The Strangers,' and in the 2005 season finale of 'Gilmore Girls'.
