'Okie From Muskogee' was written by Merle Haggard and Roy Edward Burris during the height of the Vietnam War. Haggard said that he became disheartened whilst watching Vietnam war protests and wrote the song with that emotion and viewpoint.

"Okie From Muskogee" became one of the most famous songs of Merle Haggard's career, reaching #1 on the US Country charts in 1969.
