The wildfire that burned for three days last week on South Korea's eastern coast... was brought under control over the weekend.
It's becoming clear that the scale of the damage it caused... is much bigger than had been thought.
Won Jung-hwan reports.
The damage from the last week's wildfire in Gangwon-do Province is slowly coming to light.
The fire, which started Thursday night in Goseong county, spread quickly to neighboring cities and counties,... burning an area about 7-hundred-42 times the size of a soccer field to ashes.
While no more human casualties have been discovered,… more property damage has been identified.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on Monday morning,… more than 450 homes were confirmed to have been burned in the fire.
The damaged houses include 335 from Goseong, 71 from Gangneung, and 60 from Sokcho,… resulting more than 800 people having to stay away in one of the 19 provisional shelters prepared for them.
But the victims who have lost their houses amid the wildfire are struggling to recover.
While the government has ordered authorities to pay special attention to those who lost their homes by providing living space in empty apartments,… some victims have asked for a place near their farmlands as they need to begin their work for this year's harvest.
Meanwhile, cash donations made to public organizations to help the victims of the disaster totaled more than 6-point-2 million U.S. dollars as of Sunday, with many companies such as Samsung Electronics joining the efforts.
Famous celebrities are also chipping in to donate to those affected.
Singer IU donated some 80-thousand U.S. dollars to the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation which will be used to help children who are victims of the wildfire. Global stars such as PSY and Lee Byung-hun donated similar amounts through the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association.
