Korean researchers replicate atmospheric conditions in lab environment

Korean researchers have developed technology to help bring about more accurate long-term climate predictions.
Park Se-young has more.
Radiosondes are carried by weather balloons to altitudes exceeding 35 kilometers above sea level, ...and their sensors measure pressure, temperature and relative humidity.
Made up of sensors and transmitters, the instruments are cheap and can be used any time and in any weather conditions.
However, measurements can be influenced by sunlight, wind and atmospheric pressure before the instruments reach the target altitude.
Korean researchers have developed a new technology that can accurately observe weather by eliminating these external factors.

"The pressure, temperature and wind speed all change when the radiosonde is ascending into the atmosphere, and the technology replicates those same weather conditions."

The simulation system and temperature control technology can be precisely controlled to create the meteorological elements of the actual atmosphere.
The temperatures of the troposphere 10 to 15 kilometers above ground are mostly used for short-range forecasts, …and stable temperatures of the stratosphere are used for long-term climatic predictions.
The technology works at altitudes up to 35 kilometers above sea level and in temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees Celsius.

"Application of our technology is expected to contribute not only to short-term forecasts, but also in preparation measures to adapt to long-term climate change."

By localizing radiosondes, the technology is expected to pave the way for Korea to become a Weather-Ready Nation.
