The Public Administration and Security Committee at the National Assembly unanimously approved a bill for the partial revision of the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety, which calls for the designation of pollution caused by fine dust as a "social disaster."
Under this legal classification, the government will be able to allocate extra budget, including reserve funds, to tackle the damage caused by high concentrations of ultrafine particles and other air pollutants.
Last week, most parts of the nation, including Seoul, was hit by alarmingly high levels of fine dust, prompting emergency measures being issued nationwide for an unprecedented number of days.
