Turkey expels three German journalists, escalating tensions with Germany
  • 5 years ago
Germany has lashed out at Turkey after Ankara stripped three German journalists of their press credentials.
Two have already left, while the other has been given 10 days to leave the country.
They were reportedly not given reasons as to why their accreditations were not renewed.
Berlin's foreign minister said the decision was unacceptable and accused Turkey of trying to intimidate foreign correspondents.
The Foreign Ministry also cautioned Germans planning to go to Turkey to be careful in what they say as they could be prosecuted.
Turkey has denied it is clamping down on freedom of speech.
The relationship between Berlin and Ankara had been strained following a failed 2016 coup and the arrest by Turkish authorities of tens of thousands of people including Germans.
