Even though Italy used its envoy in India to wrest custody of its errant marines under trial in India, made him lie under oath in an undertaking to the Supreme Court of India, it continues in its defiant vein. Italy has now challenged the apex court's ruling. Italy continues to believe that the case of the two Italian Marines should be resolved according to international law. Italy says it is surprised over the Supreme Court's decision to foreclose to their ambassador to leave the country without the permission of the Court. Italy says that it would amount to clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations on India's part.
