Rival parties meet to discuss normalization of parliamentary affairs
  • 5 years ago
The floor leaders of Korea's three main political parties held a closed-door meeting this morning... to discuss whether to convene a parliamentary session for February.
But no word yet on the outcome.
The main opposition Liberty Korea Party has been boycotting parliament over the appointment of Cho Hai-ju,... as one of the commissioners of the country's election watchdog, without a confirmation hearing.
With rival parties far apart on their demands,... striking a deal to normalize parliament remains a tough challenge.
The main opposition party is demanding that Cho resign,... and has called for a probe into allegations of illegal surveillance by the top office... and real estate speculation by a lawmaker of the ruling Democratic Party.
However, the ruling party is strongly against the idea,... saying the February session must be used to work on improving people's livelihoods.
