Bihu is an important festival that is celebrated with much fervor in Assam. It is categorized in a set of three different festivals: Rongali or Bohag Bihu, Kongali or Kati Bihu and Bhogali or Magh Bihu.

Amongst these three festivals, the most auspicious one is Maghar Domahi or Magh Bihu that is observed in the month of January (Magh month as per Bengali Panjika).

This festival marks the end of the harvesting season and it also marks the shift in the Sun's solstice. It is believed to be the Assam celebration of Sankranti.

Unlike the Sankranti celebration in rest of India, the festival of Bhogali Bihu is dedicated to the Hindu God of Fire - Lord Agni.

Since the granaries are full, the traditional celebration mainly involves a lot of feasting. These festivities begin a day before the main festival and the day preceding Bhogali Bihu is known as Uruka.

On the eve of this day, the young men go to the field (preferably near a river) and build a makeshift cottage called Bhelaghar with the hay and thatch found in the harvested fields.

The most important rite during this celebration is lighting up a Meji, i.e. bonfire for the night.

The entire night is spent around the Meji with people dancing to the tunes of folk songs or beating drums, and feasting on various delicacies made of rice, vegetables and meat.
