1. Makar Sankranti is one of the few Indian festivals that follows solar calendar and it falls on 14th of January.
2 .The sun enters Makara Rashi (sun sign Capricorn) on this particular day and hence is named as Makar Sankranti.
3. The day and night both are equally long and post Makar Sankranti, the days become longer and the nights shorter.
4.There is a very interesting practice of flying colorful kites, that is followed for ages on Makar Sankranti.
5.On this day, the holy river Ganga is said to have descended to Earth by flowing from Lord Shiva’s matted hair.
6. It is also associated with Hindu Sun God and his son Shani Dev and believed to forget their hatred for each other.
7.This day actually marks the beginning of spring and is generally celebrated as a harvest festival throughout India.
8. Many westerners consider Makar Sankranti to be Indian Thanksgiving festival.
9. This one festival is known by many names in different regions, like Pongal, Lohri, Uttarayan, Maghi and Khichdi.
10. In Uttar Pradesh, it marks the beginning of Kumbh Mela whereas, in Kerala, it is viewed as the end of Shabirmela.
