A young migrant mother has reportedly been injured after falling and getting impaled on border fence material.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the U.S. Border Patrol has indicated that the incident occurred Friday night when the 26-year-old tried to cross the border illegally with her two kids, ages 3 and 5.
KSWB reports, the woman, identified as a Guatemalan citizen, is said to have fallen onto rebar segments, which are being used as part of an ongoing effort to restructure the existing border fence.
The material reportedly punctured her in the side and buttocks, and she was treated for those non-life-threatening injuries. Her children also underwent a medical examination and were released to Border Patrol custody, notes VOA News.
The incident took place near the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
BuzzFeed News notes that San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott has since spoken out, saying: "Entering our country illegally, particularly over our walls is not only dangerous, but also very foolish. This woman placed her own life and her children's lives in peril. She could have easily died if not for the quick response by our agents and EMS."
