Afghanistan suicide bomber kills at least 40 religious scholars gathered in Kabul
  • 5 years ago
A suicide bomber in the Afghan capital of Kabul has killed more than 40 people and injured dozens more after targeting a crowd of religious scholars.
Other reports have suggested the death toll was more than 50.
The scholars had met inside a wedding hall near the city's airport to celebrate Prophet Mohammed's birthday.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban and Islamic State affiliates have carried out similar attacks before.
Mohammed's birthday is celebrated by Muslims around the world, but extremist groups believe marking it is sacrilegious.
