Durga Ashtami in India: The five-day celebration during Durga Puja is marked by unending revelry and celebrates the triumph of good over the evil. While each day has its own significance, the eighth day or Maha Ashtami is considered as the most auspicious. On this day, a strict diet is maintained by devotees all across the globe, some even observe fast. The day begins with Mahasnan and Shodashopachar Puja.

अष्‍टमी के दिन मां दुर्गा के आठवें रूप यानी कि महागौरी का पूजन किया जाता है. सुबह महागौरी की पूजा के बाद घर में नौ कन्‍याओं और एक बालक को घर पर आमंत्रित किया जाता है. सभी कन्‍याओं और बालक की पूजा करने के बाद उन्‍हें हल्‍वा, पूरी और चने का भोग दिया जाता है. इसके अलावा उन्‍हें भेंट और उपहार देकर विदा किया जाता है. वहीं बंगाली परिवारों में दुर्गा अष्‍टमी का विशेष महत्‍व है.
