Pompeo says progress made on denuclearizing N. Korea, but experts disagree

Let's begin with the latest on North Korea- U.S. relations.
Before leaving for Beijing to talk to his Chinese counterpart about his recent trip to Pyeongyang, Washington's top diplomat updated reporters in Seoul on what was accomplished during his meeting with the regime's leader.
Hong Yoo has our top story.
"Significant progress" is what Pompeo claims has been made during his 4th visit to Pyeongyang.

After his visit to Pyeongyang, Pompeo told reporters in Seoul that North Korea has agreed to a nuclear inspection.
He said once North Korea and the U.S. "get it logistically worked out", Kim Jong-un is ready to invite experts to verify whether the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has been destroyed irreversibly.
The Punggye-ri site is one of two locations that the leaders of the two Koreas agreed to be inspected during their 3rd Inter-Korean Summit.
The other is the Tongchang-ri missile engine test site, which the U.S. is also anticipating inspecting.

On top of that, Pompeo said that "there is real progress that can be made, substantive progress that can be made at the next summit".

But, some experts think otherwise.
Jeffrey Lewis, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at California's Middlebury Institute of International Studies, said "Like everything else Kim has done, it is a gesture that mimics disarmament that isn't actually disarmament."

Vipin Narang, professor of political science at MIT, focusing on nuclear proliferation, tweeted that "Kim has mastered the art of milking a single cosmetic concession for months to burn clock" and that they are trying to sell something they had already sold six months ago.

Meanwhile, after Pompeo met with two of his Chinese counterparts -- Foreign Minister Wang Yi and State Councilor Yang Jiechi. The U.S. Department of State said that it has identified the importance of constructive, result-oriented bilateral relations and that both sides are committed to achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea.
