[ISSUE TALK] One step closer to North Korea denuclearization? Debreifing Moon's trip to New York

문 대통령 방미성과, 비핵화 여정 또 진전 - 우정엽 박사 대담

Joining us now to take a look at the latest developments on North Korea we have with us Dr. Woo Jung-yeop,... from the Sejong Institute. Thank you for being here with us today.

My pleasure.

1 - Perhaps President Moon Jae-in's main purpose from his recent trips to North Korea and the U.S. was to get talks between those two sides restarted. Would you say that it has been a success?

2 - President Moon also talked a lot about declaring the end of the Korean war and that it was needed to secure a permanent peace regime on the peninsula, as well as to encourage North Korea to give up its nukes. Do you think the U.S. and international community have been convinced?

3 - During his trip, President Moon also stressed how economic cooperation with the North could open new doors for everyone in the region, giving the potential of the East Asian Railroad Community as a prime example. What do you think his intentions were here? Do you think he had an eye on the international sanctions?

4 - Another concern that President Moon tried to allay during his visit was the concern that declaring the end to the Korean War would leave the region at risk, especially if U.S. forces were to leave the Korean Peninsula. But he said that even with a peace agreement, having U.S. forces in Korea would be possible, playing a role as a stabilizing force in the region. Does this argument make sense?

5 - What do you make of the revised FTA that South Korea and the U.S. signed?

6 - The turnaround in Trump's remarks at the UN General Assembly when it comes to talking about Kim Jong-un is a dramatic contrast from last year. Let's take a quick look to compare the two speeches:

"The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime."
"...we have engaged with North Korea to replace the specter of conflict with a bold and new push for peace."
"I would like to thank Chairman Kim for his courage and for the steps he has taken..."
