Trump planned to withdraw from WTO, NAFTA, KORUS FTA in Aug. 2017: Woodward
  • 6 years ago
More revelations are coming out from journalist Bob Woodward's new book on U.S. President Donald Trump.
Bloomberg has a pre-release copy.... and says..... Trump decided in August last year to pull the U.S. out of the World Trade Organization, NAFTA and its trade deal with South Korea.
White House officials were said to have convinced the president from going ahead with those plans,.... painting a dire picture of the consequences.
However, a few days later,.... he was reported to have drafted a letter giving the required 1-hundred-80-day notice to pull out of the KORUS FTA.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin apparently *again persuaded Trump to change his mind.
Mnuchin warned that pulling out of the FTA would jeopardize Trump's efforts to pass massive tax cuts.... by upsetting free trade Republicans in Congress.
Woodward's book describes similar scenarios for Trump's decision to pull out of NAFTA and the WTO.
