Man Rescued From Submerged Car Amid Concerns of Lynchburg Dam Failure
  • 6 years ago

A man was rescued from a car submerged in floodwater in Lynchburg, Virginia, on August 2, after torrential rain hit the area, filling nearby College Lake beyond capacity and threatening its dam with collapse. The flash flood warning in the area was extended to Friday evening, although meteorologists said the worst of the rain had passed. The National Weather Service said the dam, west of downtown near Lynchburg College, was “above capacity” and there was some uncontrolled flow. By Friday, officials said a conditions assessment had concluded the dam was stable, so they were considering options to further stabilize it, including opening the sluice to reduce water flow. The service warned that if a complete dam failure occurs, “the water depth in Lynchburg could exceed 17 feet in seven minutes,” according to WTVR.The Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services said the threat of the dam failing caused evacuations for residents in the Blackwater Creek Trail area.
