A freedom fighter, he was the person who designed the Indian tricolor. He was born in Machilipatnam. Pingali Venkayya was known as the flagman of India. Pingali Venkayya has been immortalized through his creation of the Indian National flag.

మనదేశ జాతీయ పతాక నిర్మాత పింగళి వెంకయ్య 142వ జయంతి నేడు. మహాత్మాగాంధీ సమకాలికుల్లో ఒకరైన పింగళి 1876, ఆగస్టు 2న కృష్ణా జిల్లా భట్ల పెనుమర్రులో జన్మించారు. స్వాతంత్య్ర పోరాట సమయంలో ఎన్నో జాతీయ పతాకాలు వినియోగించారు. కానీ, పింగళి వెంకయ్య రూపొందించిన పతాకాన్ని జాతీయ పతాకంగా గుర్తిస్తూ 1921 మార్చి 31, ఏప్రిల్ 1 మధ్య విజయవాడలో మహాత్మాగాంధీ అధ్యక్షతన జరిగిన కాంగ్రెస్ కమిటీ సమావేశంలో ఏకగ్రీవంగా నిర్ణయించారు. ఆ తర్వాత ఈ పతకానికి కొద్దిగా మార్పులు చేశారు. గాంధీ సూచన మేరకు దానిపై 'రాట్నం' గుర్తు చేర్చారు. స్వాతంత్య్రానంతరం నెహ్రూ సూచనమేరకు రాట్నం స్థానంలో అశోకచక్రం చేర్చారు.
