Brett Kavanaugh is a United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals, and Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court justice — but how did he get to where he is today?

Born in 1965, Kavanaugh studied at Yale Law and worked as a clerk under Senior U.S. Circuit Judge Walker Stapleton. He was appointed Senior Associate Council during George W. Bush’s presidency and was Associate Counsel to the president, where he worked on various constitutional, legal, and ethical issues. He was later appointed to be an assistant to the president, and eventually got nominated for the D.C. Circuit.

Kavanaugh was once called the “Forrest Gump of Republicans” because of his reputation of being too partisan. While considering a constitutional challenge to the Affordable Care Act, Kavanaugh claimed the president should be able to deem an act unconstitutional, rather than a court, even though that is, so obviously, not how laws work. He was also involved in a case last year involving a minor detained in immigration custody who was seeking temporary release to get an abortion, and ended up barring her from getting the procedure.

Although the Supreme Court is not supposed to be a political body, Brett Kavanaugh’s conservative views could end up dictating U.S. law for years to come.
