Trump dampens expectations as follow-up denuclearization talks with North Korea expected next week

북미협상 시동... 트럼프 속도조절 배경은? - 봉영식 박사 대담

Joining us in the studio to give us his insights into the current situation with North Korea, we have Dr. Bong Young-shik, from the Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies. Welcome back.

My pleasure.

1 - Reports are emerging today that Pompeo will be going to North Korea next week to discuss denuclearization. It's taken a little longer to get here than expected, as the Trump administration had previously said follow-up talks would start right away after the summit with Kim Jong-un earlier this month. Why do you think there has been this delay?

2 - What do you think we can realistically expect from these talks?

3 - There's no word yet on who Pompeo's counterpart will be at the talks. Previously he has talked to Kim Yong-chol, who even came to the U.S. before the summit. There's also the possibility that it could be Ri Yong-ho, North Korea's foreign minister. Do you think it will matter who he talks to?

4 - On Thursday the U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was in town, meeting with his Korean counterpart Song Young-moo. Among other things, they are said to have discussed North Korea's denuclearization, and if that does indeed go ahead, wartime operational control could be transferred at an early date. What does this mean, and does it surprise you at all?

5 - Donald Trump said at a rally on Thursday that the North Korea denuclearization process cannot be rushed, and compared it to cooking a turkey. Compared to previous comments, especially after the summit when he said the process would begin very quickly, it's a very different tone, and he seems to be tempering expectations. Does this betray concerns in Washington that things are taking longer than they were expecting?

6 - Meanwhile the U.S. has issued its annual Human Trafficking Report and listed North Korea as one of the worst offenders for the 16th year in a row. Pompeo introduced the report himself on Thursday. Doesn't this potentially make his meeting in North Korea rather awkward? Will North Korean officials take this issue lightly?
