'U.S. needs to create painful environment in trade': Commerce Secretary Ross

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says.... Washington needs to create a painful environment for trading partners with high trade barriers.
It's the latest stinging remark in a constant blitz of tough talk from the Trump administration in regards to trade.
Ro Aram has more.
During a CNBC interview on Thursday, Wilbur Ross said the U.S. needs to create an environment where it’s more painful for countries that have huge trade barriers, both tariff and non-tariff.
He added such measures were required to achieve President Trump's ultimate goal of lower barriers and a level playing field.
He also singled out China, saying it's "compounded by their disrespect of intellectual property, the forced technology transfers, the cybersecurity breaches."
His comments came a day after he was grilled by U.S. lawmakers, who slammed the Trump administration's process of imposing tariffs as confusing and damaging.
During Wednesday's hearing, Ross dismissed those claims, saying the White House's duties targeting steel and aluminum imports were due to what it deems national security concerns.
Beijing's commerce ministry hit back at Washington's threat to impose further tariffs on Chinese goods.

"We oppose the act of extreme pressure and blackmail by swinging the big stick of trade protectionism. The US is abusing the tariff methods and starting trade wars all around the world. This will seriously damage the world trade order, undermine the interests of trade partners and the interests of its own enterprises and people..."

Gao also said trade talks between both countries were being put at risk due to Washington's unpredictable and hostile manner.
He was responding to President Trump's threat earlier this week to impose 200 billion dollars of Chinese imports with 10 percent tariffs if Beijing retaliates to his previous duties announcement.
