No-breakfast lifestyle leads to higher obesity rate

Skipping the first meal of the day could lead to weight gain... that's according to a recent study by Korean researchers.
They say an empty stomach produces hormones that induces people to eat more throughout the day.
With more on what skipping breakfast does to your body, Cho Sung-min reports.
Mr. Heo says he always arrives on time to work, despite the heavy traffic and the hordes of other morning commuters.
He says the secret to his puncuality is skipping breakfast.

But according to a recent study, Mr. Heo's lifestyle has a high chance of causing him to gain weight.
Korean researchers say... a study they conducted on more than three-thousand subjects aged 19 or older... has proven a clear correlation between skipping breakfast and obesity.
And they say more than one-fourth of Koreans over twenty years old are skipping breakfast on a regular basis.
The study found that men who didn't eat breakfast at least three times a week gained on average more than three kilograms in the course of a year.
On the other hand, men who did have breakfast at least five days a week... gained less than half that.
The result was similiar for women.

The researchers say when the stomach is empty, the body genergates vast amounts of a hormone called ghrelin.
Also known as the "hunger hormone," ghrelin increases the appetite,... prompting people to eat more for lunch and dinner.

"Many studies in the past have suggested that skipping breakfast leads to weight gain. It can also throw people's biorhythm off balance. That is why eating breakfast can help people maintain a healthier lifestyle and also lose weight."

The researchers say they're looking at ways to encourage the habit of eating morning meals to help people maintain a healthy body and lifestyle.
