Japan could contribute to potential int'l fund for N. Korea denuclearization: Abe
  • 6 years ago
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has suggested an international fund be set up to bankroll the denuclearization of North Korea,... and said Tokyo is ready to contribute.
Appearing on Yomiuri TV on Saturday, he said Japan "stands to benefit from denuclearization, so must think about such matters."
An international fund was set up in 1994, when Pyongyang previously pledged to dismantle its nuclear facilities in exchange for light-water reactors for power generation.
At the time, Japan pledged one billion dollars toward the four-point-six billion dollar project, but the fund was scrapped after Pyongyang continued to develop nuclear weapons.
Abe also said Japan will help support costs for International Atomic Energy Agency inspections, if they happen.
