North Korea-U.S. Summit D-5: Location confirmed and final details falling into place

북미 정상회담 D-5, 북한 침묵하는 이유는? - 신상협 교수 대담

Joining us in the studio to talk us through these latest developments is Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyunghee University. Professor Shin, thank you for joining us.

My pleasure.

1 - The location of the summit has been confirmed as the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island. That announcement came quite as a surprise, as many had expected the Shangri-la to be chosen. What do we know about the Capella and Sentosa Island, and why has it been chosen?

2 - The issue of costs has arisen. It's an interesting situation as the bilateral summit is being held in a third country. There were rumors that North Korea had demanded that the U.S. pay for certain things, but it looks like everyone will go dutch and pay their share. Do you believe those stories that say North Korea demanded the U.S. to shoulder costs?

3 - Now that the date and location is set, the focus turns to the topic of the talks themselves. Working level talks have continued in Panmunjom over the last few days. How do you think they are going and what do you think they will be talking about still?

4 - There are talks that there will be some surprise show pieces, such as a lunch over hamburger and fries. What kind of stunts do we think we can expect?

5 - There are already talks of a second North Korea-U.S. summit, possibly at Trump's Mar-a-lago resort in Florida. What can we read from that? Are we already lowering expectations that there won't be much agreed at this first summit?

6 - There is still no word from North Korean media over senior official Kim Yong-chol's visit to the White House. Why do you think that is?

7 - There is a lot for Kim Jong-un to get ready before the meeting next week. But there is also a question mark over how this summit is being viewed within the regime, because there has been such a head-spinning turnaround of events and policies over the last 6 months. Does Kim need to convince his people of this change in direction or can we assume that the North Korean public will follow where Kim leads?

8 - CNN has reported that Bolton deliberately mentioned the Libya model to try and cause the summit to collapse. Although he seems to have been left out of the preparations since then, it appears he has been included in the list for the summit team. We don't know if he will be in the room with Kim Jong-un and Trump, but what effect could he have?

9 - Later today, Trump will meet with the Japanese Prime Minister for a U.S.-Japan summit in Washington. Abe will be looking to give his input to Trump's summit with Kim Jong-un, but what can Abe really say to influence proceedings?

Thank you for your time today.
