판문점•싱가포르, 북미정상회담 실무협의 절정 - 정대진 박사 대담

To try and sort out all these diplomatic meetings ahead of the North Korea-U.S. summit, we have with us Dr. Jung Dae-jin, a research fellow at the Ajou Institute of Unification. Thank you for joining us.

My pleasure.

1 - There are many talks going on at the moment, but let's start with that last report. The U.S. and North Korean delegations, led by Sung Kim and Choe Son-hui, met in Panmunjom today for a second round of working level talks. They obviously talked about the upcoming summit and a potential deal for North Korean denuclearization, but can you talk us through some of the issues they would have wanted to tackle?

2 - What are the main differences and points of conflict between the two sides?

3 - Another meeting between delegates from the two sides is set to take place in Singapore, mostly on the actual logistics of holding the summit in the city state. What are the key points there?

4 - There are now reports that Kim Yong-chol, the vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party Central Committee, or simply put, one of Kim Jong-un's most trusted advisors, has been spotted at Beijing airport supposedly on his way to the U.S. for high-level talks, mostly likely with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. What would these two talk about that could not have been discussed at the lower-level meetings?

5 - Washington for now has shelved its plans to impose further sanctions on North Korea. Doesn't this go against its pledge to continue putting maximum pressure on the regime?

6 - The White House has revealed that Trump will hold a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe before his meeting with Kim Jong-un. What will Abe look to tell Trump and what is Japan's agenda?

7 - This Friday, the two Koreas will restart their own talks after a high-level meeting was cancelled at the last minute previously. What are the inter-Korean issues they will likely discuss? Do you think they will talk about the U.S. summit?

8 - Discussions on separated family reunions are also expected. The South would like them to happen, but the North is demanding the repatriation of restaurant workers, who Pyongyang argues did not defect voluntarily. Can this issue be resolved?

9 - North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun carried an opinion piece today calling for the joint military drills between South Korea and the U.S. to be stopped, specifically citing the Ulchi-Freedom Guardian drill in August. Do you think there is a chance South Korea and the U.S. will listen? Does Pyongyang expect it to actually happen?

We're out of time but thank you for coming in today, and sharing your insights.
