N. Korea seeking link to S. Korean air traffic control to expand routes
  • 6 years ago
North Korea is seeking to add more flight routes to other countries,... and it wants to do that by linking its flight information region, or F-I-R, to that of South Korea.
F-I-Rs are regions of airspace assigned to the air traffic controllers of specific countries,... and access to the nation's air traffic control would allow the regime to have more routes.
According to Seoul's foreign ministry the matter is being considered by relevant bodies... with the transport ministry at the center of it all.
A ministry spokesperson said, to his knowledge, Pyongyang wants to create a new route to a third country -- not South Korea.
It was reported last week that the reclusive state applied to the International Civil Aviation Organization in February to open new air routes to the South.
Currently, North Korea's Air Koryo has only chartered flights to China and Russia.
