S. Korean trade minister draws line between FTA and currency issue
  • 6 years ago
Seoul's trade minister has confirmed the amended free trade deal between South Korea and the U.S. does not include deals on currency or the fruit market.
The remarks came as Washington had previously said the new-look FTA will include a side deal... prohibiting both countries from deliberately devaluing their currencies for trade advantages.
Minister Kim Hyun-jong stressed the ongoing currency and foreign exchange policy talks are separate from the FTA.
He also refuted speculation over providing easier access to the Korean fruit market.
Kim said Washington's mentioning of market access for fruits is related to the application of the sanitary measures,... which is to be decided by the World Trade Organization... and is "NOT an FTA negotiation issue".
