Seoul denounces Tokyo for local event celebrating sovereignty over Korean islets
  • 6 years ago
Seoul denounced Tokyo for sending senior government officials to attend a local event which celebrates Japan's sovereignty over Korea's Dokdo island.
The foreign ministry issued a strong statement of protest against the annual event, and called for it to be abolished.
Seoul also demanded Tokyo stop laying claim to the easternmost islets that are historically, geographically, and legally South Korean territory,... adding that as a responsible nation, Japan should view history with humility and honesty.
It's the sixth year in a row that Tokyo sent representatives to the controversial event in Shimane Prefecture.
The region laid claim to the Korea-controlled island in 2005, even designating February 22nd as 'Takeshima Day', after the Japanese name for Dokdo.
