The Korean government has designated February 28th as a national memorial day,... to commemorate the Daegu democracy movement of 1960.
It passed the decision during Tuesday morning's cabinet meeting,... making the day the 48th national memorial day.
On February 28th 1960,... students from eight high schools in the southeastern city of Daegu took to the streets, protesting against then-President Rhee Syngman , and his attempt to use election fraud to secure a fourth term in office
Those protests led to the April 19th Movement in the same year,... which ended the authoritarian rule of the Rhee administration.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will now take charge of the day's ceremonies and events,... which had previously been organized by the city of Daegu.
