Fire crews extinguished a blaze at the University of Bristol’s Fry Building on the evening of January 6, though said they would remain at the scene overnight damping down hot spots. The Grade II listed building was undergoing a £33 million renovation at the time to be turned into the new home for the university’s School of Mathematics, according to the university’s website. The fire sparked the evacuation of surrounding buildings, including the university’s landmark Wills Memorial Building. The university said the library in the Wills Memorial Building would remain closed the following day.Crews from eight fire stations – with six fire engines, two turntable ladders and other vehicles – responded to the blaze, according to a statement from Avon Fire and Rescue. The service said it believed no one was in the building when the fire broke out, and that an investigation would be carried out into the cause of the blaze.
