$350 million worth of subsea cable to be laid down on sea floor

SYDNEY — Southern Cross Cable Network said it will begin the constructuction of a $350million submarine cable after finding a more efficient route from mapping 15,000 km of seabed.
According to the company, the NEXT subsea cable route will connect Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles through the Wallis and Fortuna waters.
"People tend to think their Facebook and Snapchat content is delivered from overseas by satellite and that's incorrect," Anthony Briscoe, Southern Cross Cable Network President and Chief Executive Officer said in a press release. "For the overwhelming majority of internet delivery, our connections are made to various websites and apps from abroad by a series of 'pipes' that rest on seabeds across the globe."
Newsweek reported that subsea cables handle 99 percent of data traffic that includes internet usage, phone calls and text messages. The underwater cables are faster than satellite transmission by up to eight times.
Southern Cross has received expressions of intent from eight customers, including Fiji, Samoa, Tokelau and Kiribati. The new cable is expected to be operational by late 2019.
