Just days after North Korea’s threat to target the area around Guam, President Trump has reassured the U.S. territory’s governor that they are “safe”; he also predicted a significant boost in the island’s tourism.
The exchange occurred on Friday and Republican Governor Eddie Baza Calvo posted a video of himself on the call with the president.
After greeting Calvo, Trump says, “It’s great to speak to you, and I just wanted to pay my respects, and we are with you 1,000 percent. You are safe. We’re with you 1,000 percent. And I wanted to call you and say hello. How are you?”
Calvo gives a complimentary response, saying, in part, “I have never felt more safe or so confident than with you at the helm. So, with all the criticism going on over there from a guy that’s being targeted, we need a president like you, so I’m just so thankful. And I’m glad you’re holding the helm, sir.”
The president eventually tells Calvo, “Eddie, I have to tell you, you’ve become extremely famous. All over the world, they’re talking about Guam, and they’re talking about you, and I think...tourism, I can say this, your tourism, you’re going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you….It just looks like a beautiful place.”
This call comes after the Associated Press tweeted Wednesday, “North Korea says it will complete plan to attack waters near Guam by mid-August then wait for commander in chief's order.”
