Firework disaster: Teen loses four fingers to sparkly fireworks

LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON — A teen from Washington hopes his devastating experience of losing four fingers on one hand to fireworks will remind folks out there just how dangerous the explosives can be.

Lakewood resident Kurtis Musewicz, 17, and his friend found a mortar-and-shell firework at their workplace last month. Musewicz thought the fuse would be long enough for him to light and throw it before it went off, NBC-affiliate KING-TV reported.

However, Musewicz assumption was wrong, as soon as he lit the device, and before he could throw the explosive somewhere safe, the firework blew up in his left hand. After the explosion, the stunned Musewicz said he looked at his friend, then down at his the hand that had been holding the explosive.

Musewicz then realized that his hand was completely obliterated, and whatever was left was bleeding with bone sticking out. Musewicz was rushed to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

According to the doctor who treated him, young males are the most common injury victims of fireworks, and shell-and-mortar fireworks are the most dangerous ones.

With July 4 coming up, Musewicz hopes his devastating experience will be a strong reminder to everyone out there celebrating to be wary of the sparkly explosives.
