Mitt Romney has revealed that Hillary Clinton recommended he take the Secretary of State position under then-President-elect Trump if the opportunity arose, reports Time.
The one-time Republican presidential nominee and former Massachusetts governor made the admission on Friday during his annual E2 Summit in Utah where he is quoted as saying, “I spoke with virtually all the former secretaries of state...I spoke with Secretary Clinton, and in each case, each of them said: 'Please, please take that job,' if it's offered to you. We would very much like to see you serve in that capacity.”
He added, “I would have accepted the job had he asked me to do it.”
That said, Romney still mentioned how “shocked” he had been when he was informed that he was a potential candidate.
As a report by Deseret News states, “Romney was one of Trump's most vocal critics during the 2016 GOP primaries, labeling the billionaire businessman a fraud and a phony in a widely covered speech at the University of Utah.”
In fact, at the time, reports were emerging from the Trump transition team that Romney may have to apologize for the negative comments he made during the election in order to increase his chances of being offered the cabinet position.
Trump ally Roger Stone added to the speculation when he said during an interview that the president-elect “was interviewing Mitt Romney for secretary of state in order to torture him. To toy with him.”
During the recent conference, Romney admitted that current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was a better fit for the job than he would have been given the administration’s foreign policy positions.
