DESTIN, FLORIDA — A teenage girl escaped a potentially deadly encounter with a shark by putting up her dukes.
On the afternoon of April 2, Caitlyn Taylor, 17, was on a school trip from Louisville, Kentucky with her high school softball team for a tournament in Florida.
Standing waist-deep by a sandbar with her friends, she suddenly spotted what she initially thought was the fin of a dolphin.
As a wave approached, she turned to swim back to shore, and that’s when she was bit on her leg.
Realizing she was being attacked by a shark, she quickly turned and used her fists to fight back. Punching the 5-foot long underwater predator proved to be enough, the shark released its grip and swam away.
Caitlyn got away, but not unscathed, suffering cuts on her hand, and both her legs that required more than 120 stitches. The type of shark has yet to be identified, but local experts believe the type of attack was consistent with that of a bull shark.
