Stephen Hawking has suggested that President Trump remove one of his top officials.
During an interview with ITV's Good Morning Britain on Monday, the renowned physicist said, “He should replace Scott Pruitt at the Environment Protection Agency.”
Hawking added, “Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent. It affects America badly, so tackling it should win votes for his second term. God forbid.”
Pruitt faced intense backlash less than two weeks ago when he questioned the role CO2 plays in climate change; in an interview on CNBC, he said, “I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do, and there's tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that [CO2 is] a primary contributor to the global warming that we see.”
According to NPR, “Those statements are at odds with an overwhelming body of scientific evidence showing that humans are causing the climate to warm by releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.”
Hawking was one of 375 scientists who signed an open letter in September last year expressing concern about then-candidate Donald Trump's suggestion that the U.S. should withdraw from the Paris Accord to fight climate change.
In his recent interview, Hawking also alluded to the possibility that his prior criticisms of Trump may impede future visits to the U.S.; he said, “I have many friends and colleagues there and it is still a place I like and admire in many ways, but I fear that I may not be welcome.”
