Eyewitnesses to Monday’s events provide a chronology.

At 08:15am, a group of high school students heard an explosion while exercising at a park close to a government building.

Fifteen minutes later, the students chased a man they saw running away from the explosion toward the building.

At 9am, police arrived and surrounded the suspected bomber who was hiding out in the government building. Shortly afterward, police opened fire.

At around 10am, the suspect started a fire in the building’s second floor. The fire department extinguished the blaze and police stormed the building.

Police found the suspect with a serious gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to hospital but died en route.

The suspect has been named as Yaya Cahdiyat, a former prisoner convicted of terrorism offences in 2011.

Police are treating the incident as an act of terror, and say Cahdiyat called for the release from prison of friends convicted on terror

Investigators are searching for a suspect believed to have escaped on motorcycle. The episode is an embarrassment for Indonesia’s government as it prepares for a state visit by the Saudi king.
