PARIS — Authorities are stepping up security measures as the Euro 2016 football championship kicks off in France.

Euro 2016 will see 24 teams competing in 51 games at 10 host cities, including Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon. Some 2.5 million fans are expected to visit the country for the tournament, which runs from June 10 to July 10.

All stadiums will be protected by a dual ring of steel, CNN reported. The stadiums and facilities for competing teams will be heavily guarded and have been declared no-fly zones.

A big security concern is the fan zones where supporters watch games on giant outdoor screens. The 10 fan zones are mostly located in city centres. For example, the Paris fan zone, located at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, is the largest and expected to receive 90,000 fans for each game.

Security precautions for the fan zones include metal detectors, video surveillance, sniffer dogs, a large police presence and a ban on large bags.

Nearly 100,000 members of the French security forces will be deployed to oversee the stadiums, training facilities and fan zones in the country, according to CNN.

The French authorities have also launched an app called SAIP, which alerts users to terror attacks within 15 minutes of an incident occurring.

Britain and the U.S. have issued a warnings about a potential terror threat to citizens who wish to travel to France during the tournament.
