Woman crushed by tree when homemade zip line fails

NEHALEM, OREGON — A young mother-of-three died last weekend in a freak accident involving a homemade zip line and a tree that had had enough.

Tami McVay and her boyfriend Joshua Jackson were hiking near the Nehalem River in rural Oregon on Feb. 4, when they stumbled upon a homemade zip line, the Oregonian reported. The seat was made of a wood plank, connected to the line wire by a piece of rope.

The couple hopped on the seat together and slid down, but didn’t make it far before one of the trees supporting the zip line uprooted and fell on them.

Jackson somehow avoided major injury, but the same couldn’t be said for McVay. The tree struck McVay’s skull, causing severe head trauma, and killing her at the scene. The couple reportedly traveled so far along the path that rescue teams had to use ATVs, then hike 2 miles to reach them.

In a bizarre twist, authorities arrested Jackson on an outstanding warrant in connection with a 2012 conviction for fourth-degree assault. Tami Mcvay was 34, and leaves behind three children. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help her family.
